Because not all energy-saving efforts are as easy to see as the recycling bin next to your trash can, we’ve rounded up 9 quick & simple changes to try in your home that can go a long way to help protect the planet (and hopefully save a little $ along the way)!
1. Unplug It and Turn It Off
The best way to save energy is to make sure your appliances and electronics aren’t working overtime while you’re gone. Before you leave a room, turn off the lights. If you’re finished making your smoothie, unplug the blender. Only plug your printer in when you’re using it to print something.
2. Light the Way to Energy Savings
One of the easiest ways to improve energy efficiency in your home is to replace your lightbulbs with LEDs. Even though LEDs cost more at the store, they last longer than traditional lightbulbs and use less electricity.
3. Nature’s A/C
The weather’s getting a little warmer, but not so warm that you need you’re A/C on 24/7. On cooler days and at night, try leaving your windows open to cool down your home. Let that Spring breeze in and get rid of that Winter stuffiness with some fresh air.
4. Washing
Doing laundry is one of those things that sometimes may… pile up! And we’re here to tell you that it’s okay, in fact we might even encourage it! When your laundry piles up, make the most of your water, detergent, and machine energy by washing a full load. Full load cycles instead of multiple smaller loads help reduce your water and detergent usage and your use of energy.
5. Drying
When it comes to the dryer – use lower heat settings. Even if the drying cycle is longer, you’ll use less energy and be less likely to over-dry your clothes. Also remember to switch loads while the dryer is warm! This allows the remaining heat inside the dryer to get used on that next cycle! While you’re on a roll with these earth-friendly tips, consider air-drying to further your energy reduction.1
6. Get Your Hands Dirty
Give your dishwasher a break and wash your dishes by hand.
7. Natural Hair, Don't Care
Blow drying your hair can cause damage and dry it out. Putting the hair dryer away can lower your use of electricity and keep your hair healthier at the same time!
8. Get a Hobby
Unplug the TV for the night and read a book instead. When it’s nice out, go for a walk or kick a ball around. We promise Netflix won’t disappear if you take a break from binge-watching.
9. Wait While You Bake
Wait to open your oven until your cookies are finished baking. Temperatures can drop quickly and your food will have to stay in longer to make up for it.
