Wait, you’ve been working from home for how many months now? January 1st is just around the corner and a lot of us have been working from home for most of the year. For some of us, it’s been almost as long since we’ve cleaned and organized our home office space. So, if you have a little bit of time off for the holidays, make cleaning your home office your Holiday project with these tips.
The Big Purge
Over the course of the last few months, papers, writing utensils, kitchen utensils, children’s toys and other piles of stuff have accumulated in your office. The first step to cleaning up is clearing out the clutter. Find a proper home for the things you want to keep, like your son’s favorite stuffed animal, and grab a trash can (or recycle bin) for all those pens that are out of ink and scraps of paper that aren’t needed.
The Leftovers
Organize, organize, organize. Develop a filing system for any papers you need to keep. Once you’ve properly labeled folders and made a home for your important documents, don’t let yourself slack throughout the rest of the year. When a piece of paper makes its way onto your desk, file it or toss it right away.
Digital Dusting
Most of our work is on the computer these days, but that doesn’t mean things can’t get a little cluttered in the digital world. Clean up your desktop and create a digital filing system similar to your paper filing system. Then, you’ll always remember where each document belongs.
While you’re at it, feel free to tackle your inbox with the same tactics. Save your important emails in corresponding folders in case you need to access them later.
